MISSION & VISION

a dynamic Christian community within the heart of South Carolina

Our Mission

In keeping with the Great Commission, First Presbyterian Church of Columbia aspires to be a dynamic Christian community within the heart of South Carolina, centered in the worship of God and bearing witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Our Vision

As Christ’s disciples we strive to build vibrant lives, strong families, and a fellowship in which members care for and love one another and together seek the well-being of our city, state, and the world.

By the power of the Holy Spirit we seek to develop a vital preaching and teaching ministry, aimed at drawing men and women to Christ; healing, comforting, and nurturing them in the faith; equipping them for service, and deploying them effectively into all walks of life.

Core Values

The core values that determine how ministry at First Presbyterian Church should take place now and in the future are:

T R U T H

God's word (The Bible) is inerrant and we embrace as true and binding whatever is taught in the Bible. We believe in the importance of sound Biblical instruction, collectively in the worship services and in smaller group settings (2 Timothy 3:16; John 1:1, 14:6;, Luke 4:4; Acts 20:27; Hebrews 10:27).

G R A C E

God's remarkable gift to his children is the unmerited substitution of Jesus' perfect life and death received by faith and repentance through the work and power of the Holy Spirit resulting in our complete freedom from the just wrath of God. We believe in the vital importance of preaching the biblical gospel to ourselves and to others (Mark 2:17; Romans 7:24-25; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8).

C O M M U N I T Y

The benefit of living in an open, honest community is worshipping together, growing together, and helping each other live as followers of Jesus Christ to his glory. We believe in the importance of gathering together in both collective and smaller group settings (Acts 2:42-47; Colossians 1:28; Matthew 5:13-16).

L O V E

The sum of our grateful obedience to God is love. Loving God and our neighbors is the fruit of God's grace to us as believers. We believe in demonstrating the love of Christ in an infectious zeal for making the gospel known locally and around the world and in a variety of diaconal ministries in our congregation and in the city in which we live (Matt. 28:18-20; John 13:34-35, 14:21; Acts 6:1-6; 1 Corinthians 13:1-13).

Vision for worship, discipleship, pastoral care, and outreach.

Worship

In Scripture, God dictates how His people should worship him. Therefore, public worship at our church is grounded upon and structured by the word of God.

Discipleship

Christ's Great Commission includes making disciples through fellowship, the study of God's word, accountability, and discernible spiritual growth. We are committed to the sanctity of biblical marriage (between one man and one woman). We also encourage that children be raised in the discipline and instruction of the Lord (Gen 2:22-24, Eph 6:4).

Pastoral Care

Outreach

The aim is to provide loving, biblical, pastoral care to every member of our church.
The goal is to engage members in concern for mercy ministry and the fulfillment of the Great Commission, locally and throughout the world.
